SELF - PORTRAIT 002

Brad c. scholl [ cinematographer ] [ HAMILTON, ON ]

In 2000, I became a Toronto Raptors fan.

I know you might be expecting a story here about the first time I picked up a camera. But for me, this is the moment. It’s when I began forming the rudimentary building blocks for my future as a cinematographer.

I was fascinated by the game. The energy of the crowd fuelled my excitement. The player introduction and subsequent light show left me in awe. More than anything, I was mesmerized by the fast-paced, yet careful collaboration it took to execute each successful play. The game allows for individualism but thrives on a team first mentality.

At the time, being a basketball fan while growing up small-town Ontario wasn’t typical. That was okay with me though. I loved being a little different.

THIS IS THE FOUNDATION.

I have an unwavering passion for my craft that I pour into everything I create. I’m motivated to grow with every new project. Never shying away from an opportunity to tackle a challenge or step away from the norm.

My inspiration is born from my surroundings. Art, music, internet culture, literature, or even the emotions of myself and those around me. These influences fuel new ideas and add a fresh lens to every project.

I value the contribution of every person involved in a production and thrive in environments that encourage collaboration. I believe that no idea is meaningless. A willingness to share even an obscure thought can add significant value to every creation.

THIS GAME, LIKE BASKETBALL, IS FAST PACED, CALCULATED & COLLABORATIVE. IT ALLOWS FOR INDIVIDUALISM BUT THRIVES ON A TEAM FIRST MENTALITY. IT HAS A DISTINCT ENERGY AND AN UNMATCHED ENTHUSIASM. IT REQUIRES ALL RESPECTIVE INDIVIDUALS, ALL OF WHOM HAVE DIFFERENT OUTLOOKS & PERSPECTIVES, TO COME TOGETHER TO SUCCESSFULLY AND EFFICIENTLY CAPTURE BEAUTIFUL IMAGES & STORIES. EQUIVALENT TO SPORTS; GREAT TEAMS HAVE GREAT LEADERS. GREAT TEAMS WORK HARD FOR EACHOTHER. GREAT TEAMS HAVE A BOND; THEY’RE FAMILY.

For me, working in this industry is far more than simply picking up a camera or adjusting some lights. It’s each individual that you pass on set, bringing expertise and knowledge of their unique skillset, to enhance and uplift their fellow teammates.
